CRYSTAL REPORTS QUESTIONS

Can I Burst Crystal Reports Without Buying SAP Crystal Server Concurrent Sessions Licenses?

Yes, a dedicated workflow such as CRD can burst Crystal Reports without using SAP Crystal Server’s personalized publishing feature. That is a different reporting route, not an extension of Named User publishing rights.

The report components and deployment still need their appropriate licenses.

The customer requirement

Keep the statement job separate from the server entitlement

Imagine accounts wanting to send each customer a separate monthly PDF. The business has working Crystal Reports, but buying a server publishing entitlement would be a new decision.

The immediate need is to produce the customer-specific files and deliver them. You can evaluate a dedicated scheduler for that work while retaining the report designs.

For this example, use a grouped statement and two controlled customers. The alternative must reproduce the actual statement separation and routing, rather than merely avoid a line item on a quote.

Compare a complete alternative

The replacement needs report execution, customer selection, output and delivery. A different timer alone does not replace personalized publishing.

Your options

Evaluate Crystal Reports bursting without Concurrent Sessions

SAP’s Crystal Server FAQ assigns personalized automated publishing to Concurrent Sessions licensing. Named User licensing does not acquire that feature merely because another process starts the publication.

CRD’s Bursting schedule can separate selected report groups and route them to destinations. A Data-Driven schedule can instead use execution-time customer records for report parameters and delivery instructions.

That allows the customer statement job to run through CRD rather than SAP Crystal Server publishing. If other work still uses Crystal Server, retain the appropriate server access and entitlement for that work.

Keep the remaining components visible

A third-party scheduler does not remove the need for appropriately licensed report design and runtime components.

Set up the alternative

Prove two customer PDFs in CRD

Choose the RPT and reporting period, then decide whether its groups already define the required customer boundaries. Use Bursting for that grouped output or a Data-Driven schedule for customer-specific parameterized runs.

Map each approved customer to a controlled destination. Choose PDF, a recognizable name and the document-protection process the statement requires.

Open both attachments and inspect every page. Confirm that customer identity, detail, totals and subreports remain within the intended boundary.

Change an address and test an incomplete assignment before enabling the full audience. Accounts should have one maintained set of instructions, rather than recreating a separate manual export for every customer.

Keep the comparison practical

Measure the accepted statements and the effort to maintain assignments. Do not infer a particular query count or guaranteed throughput from the word bursting.

Keep it accountable

Make the customer assignment an owned business record

The alternative works when accounts can maintain who receives which statement and the reporting owner can investigate a failed run. Routing data is part of that responsibility.

Technical reference: entitlement and integration boundaries

Verify the chosen runtime, host and any application or redistribution rights for the actual deployment. The alternative replaces a workflow; it does not alter SAP’s license terms.

If a portal starts the CRD job, authorize customer and period on the backend. Use the documented CRD API and preserve execution references. Investigate partial delivery before retrying a customer batch.

Retain the decision record

Keep the chosen workflow, current entitlement information and accepted outputs together for the next renewal or server review.

Your next step

Choose a customer-delivery route you can explain

Accounts should receive correct separate statements, with a clear operating and licensing basis. Compare that outcome with the native publication route you would otherwise acquire.
