CRYSTAL REPORTS QUESTIONS

What Is the Difference Between Crystal Reports and SAP Crystal Server?

Crystal Reports is the report design and reporting environment; SAP Crystal Server adds centrally managed report access and server scheduling. Owning the designer does not establish every server publishing entitlement.

CRD is a separate option for automating existing Crystal Reports and their file-delivery routines.

The product question

Separate designing the statement from sending it every month

Imagine an analyst who has finished a customer statement in Crystal Reports. Accounts now asks whether buying SAP Crystal Server is necessary to send it automatically.

The statement design and recurring delivery are different responsibilities. The RPT contains the report; a scheduling environment executes it with the required values and places the output where it belongs.

For this example, accounts needs emailed statements rather than a new interactive portal. That distinction makes the product comparison more useful.

Start with what the recipient needs

A PDF attachment and managed browser access are different outcomes. Decide which service the customer requires.

The distinction

Understand Crystal Reports vs SAP Crystal Server

Crystal Reports is used to create and maintain reports, including layout, selection and calculations. SAP Crystal Server provides managed access to reports and recurring server execution.

SAP distinguishes standard scheduling from personalized automated publishing. The latter requires Concurrent Sessions licensing; a Named User entitlement is not interchangeable with that publishing entitlement. See SAP’s product FAQ.

CRD works around existing Crystal Reports, providing saved schedules, exports, recipient-specific workflows and destinations. CRD is separate from the Crystal Reports designer and does not replace SAP Crystal Server’s full repository and interactive access model.

Keep the full license name

Concurrent Sessions describes a particular SAP Crystal Server entitlement. Avoid the ambiguous shorthand “CS licensing” in a buying decision.

Choose the workflow

Map the monthly statement before buying another component

Record whether every customer receives the same file or a customer-specific version. Then identify the output, destination, recurrence and any need for interactive access.

If an existing SAP Crystal Server schedule or licensed publication covers that job, try it with two controlled customers. Inspect the complete attachments and assignments.

For a dedicated CRD route, keep the RPT and configure the appropriate Single, Bursting or Data-Driven schedule. Test the same customer statements and include the archive or secondary destination the business needs.

Compare the resulting maintenance work and current quote. A product name alone does not establish that all report, runtime and recipient-use rights are covered.

Use one statement in both evaluations

That keeps the comparison about delivery and operation rather than different sample reports.

For application owners

Choose an integration that matches the reporting environment

An application working with a managed server repository has different responsibilities from one requesting a saved delivery job. Keep the choice tied to the feature the application must offer.

Technical reference: interfaces and report rights

Use the API or SDK documented for the installed SAP Crystal Server version when integrating with that environment. Use CRD’s REST API when requesting CRD jobs.

Verify the current runtime, deployment and license terms for the chosen route. Receiving an exported file is not the same as granting interactive access to a reporting server, and a scheduler license does not grant unrelated design or runtime rights.

Keep authorization in the application

The application decides which customer a requester may access. A report parameter is part of implementing that decision, not a substitute for it.

Your next step

Buy for the reporting service accounts actually needs

The analyst can keep the statement design while accounts chooses how its monthly delivery will be operated. Use managed server access where it is needed and compare dedicated automation for the recurring file handoff.
